Potta Potti 50-50 - Cricket, comedy & carnival

Cricket evokes passion and sentiments among Indians. So does cinema. And if a movie is made on cricket laced with comedy, it would end up entertaining the masses. 'Potta Potti' is exactly one that combines all to leave a magic on the masses.

It is like watching an entertaining Twenty 20 match. Running for just two hours, the film has everything one would ask for in a commercial entertainer. No stunts or weepy scenes, but a collage of sequences that makes you laugh loud.

Half the job of director Yuvaraj is done by choosing to do a movie on cricket and casting a real-life cricketer Sadagopan Ramesh in the lead role. He has opted to go for fresh cast, apparently to ensure freshness in the film.

Set in a remote rural backdrop, 'Potta Potti' is a laugh-a-thon that throws light on the innocent lives in villages. Yuvaraj has kept a message through the hilarious entertainer-the need to preserve our greenery.

His grip over the medium, considering this to be his first venture, deserves applause. He is assisted by a strong team of technicians, who have contributed their might. Be it cinematographer Gopi Amarnath, music composer Arul Dev or editor Raja Muhammad, everyone leave their presence and mark in the film.

The movie is set in a village in Theni where the place is controlled by two-Kodaivannan (R Sivam) and his cousin Kollaivannan (Umar). The former is an innocent but an idiotic youth. The latter is selfish and is loaded with ulterior motives. They fight to hold the hands of their uncle's daughter Parijatham (Harini).

The village panchayat decides that both should play cricket and the winner would get Parijatham. Now begins the drama between both, who know nothing about the game. Coming to know that Ramesh (Sadgoppan Ramesh), a cricketer, is in town, one of the competitors kidnaps him and forces him to be the coach.

But the twist in the tale is Rameshand Parijatham fall in love. Finally the match is played. Who emerges the winner and who married Parijatham forms the climax.

Three cheers to Ramesh. He amazes with his performance. As himself on screen, he is at ease. He plays the role with punch. Humour comes naturally to him. Sivam and Avatar are wonderful duo. Their roles are well-written. Harini is pleasant and bubbly. She impresses. The rest of the cast too fits the bill.

At places, the movie reminds 'Lagaan', but nowhere leaves one irritated. Dialogues by Yuvaraj are the film's high point. They are hilarious and enjoyable. Produced by V Murali Raman, 'Potta Potti' ends up as a movie that is quite different, providing fun and laughter. Good show Yuvaraj, Ramesh and the team!

Uyarthiru 420 Movie Review

After Pa Vijay, it's now the turn of lyricist Snehan to try his act on screen playing the lead role. In 'Uyarthiru 420', he has chosen to play a conman rather than a hero flexing muscles and uttering punch dialogues.
Directed by Premnath, the film speaks about a cheater, who deceives everyone for a purpose. Thamizh (Snehan) is a conman, who makes quick money after making everyone fall as his prey. One day, he comes across Iyal (Meghna) and cheats her to make some gain.

In the meantime, Rishvanth (Vaseegaran) runs a five-star hotel. He has great ambitions, but he sustains huge loss in the business. His board of directors gives him a final chance of six months to set things right or wind up the business.

Thamizh joins his hotel as general manager. Though a commoner, he gives his best for the job. Meanwhile, he falls in love with Iyal. As it happens, Rishvanth is challenged by Jagan Pattabiraman (Jayaprakash), a greedy but influential journalist.

Thamizh steps in to help his boss. Rishvanth's secret marriage with his lover and a popular actress Devatha (Akshara) is scandalized by Jagan in his newspaper. It spells trouble in Rishvanth's life.

Thamizh plans big and saves Rishvanth's life and also helps him overcome his debts and at the same time teaches a lesson to Jagan, and how he does is what that forms the rest of the plot.

Snehan plays his part well. Premanth has penned the script to Snehan's strength. He has romance, action and humour to handle in the movie.

Vaseegaran plays a key role making a comeback. He is tailor-made for the character of suave and rich businessman. Meghna plays a bubbly young girl. Jayaprakash adds strength to the film with his portrayal. He is impressive and carries his role well.

Shankar's cinematography capturing Malaysia is good, while Mani Sharma has come up with some loud songs. Premanth has ensured that the movie has less dull moments. However there are many logical lapses that may take away the interest. Produced by Rich India Talkies, 'Uyarthiru 420' is more like a curate's egg.

Sneha as tribal woman in Rajanna

Sneha is reportedly playing the role of a tribal woman in her upcoming Nagarjuna starrerRajanna, set in the backdrop of Telangana Razakar movement, and she would be seen wearing only sari (without blouse) throughout the film.

Reports also suggest that the actress will be also seen in a few hot romantic scenes with Nagarjuna, who plays a Telangana fighter in this film directed by Vijayendra Prasad (director Rajamouli’s father) and produced by Nagarjuna himself under the banner of Annapurna Studios

Rajanna is nearing completion and the shooting is presently progressing at Annapoorna Studios in Hyderabad.

mayakkam Tamil Movie

Selvaraghavan’s Mayakkam Enna has somehow made it to its final schedule. The film has had so many changes from the

cast to the title. From Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam, it was said to be rechristened to Irandam Ulagam and then to Mayakkam Enna.

Now, Mayakkam Enna could well change before the release. The film stars Dhanush and Richa Gangopadhyay in the lead roles. It has only a song and a few scenes left before moving onto the post production.

Selvaraghavan has retained his Aayirathil Oruvan team including Cinematographer Ramji and GV Prakash for music. The final schedule is taking place in Erode for which Richa Gangopadhyaytook a tough detour from Mysore to Erode to be on time on the sets.

GV Prakash has churned out hits in Aayirathil Oruvan. The music in Selvaraghavan’s film turns out to be a highlight and so the songs are expected to top the charts once again. Post-production work will begin from September 1, 2011. Mayakkam Enna will release for Diwali.

Three heroines-vikram-karikalan

Vikram quickly hopped from Rajapattai to Karikalan completing schedules after schedules. He is known to change his looks for each film. In Rajapattai, he plays a burly gym master and in Karikaalan, he plays a king. Perhaps, this is why the looks don’t matter.

Karikalan has walked a schedule in the deep Talakona forests at Andhra Pradesh. Karikalan is written and directed by LI Kannan. It is produced by S Parthi and S Vasan for Silver Line Film Factory. Director Kannan is the special effects director of Anniyan, Ghajini, Sivaji, Earam and Endhiran.

Director LI Kannan will marry technology with the past. Zarine Khan, heroine of the Hindi film Veer, is the heroine of the film along with Radhika Apte and MithraKurien. Pasupathi plays a pivotal role in the film. This period flick is about one of the greatest historical kings in Tamil history.

What happens when a director is inspired by the movies of the 80s era – the era that had explored themes like love and friendship and killed them with melodramatic overdose. Well, you get Sagakkal. Director Muthukumarasamy’s Sagakkal is a retake of the long forgotten eighties with all the excess melodrama surrounding a wafer thin tale of love and friendship.

The story, you could write at the back of a bus ticket, is about a boy (with values and ambitions) falling in love with a girl. And then there is a climax that reminds you of so many other movies. The title is also symbolic of what the movie has to offer. Although it is set among a bunch of friends, it never really deals with their friendship as such. Instead, it is mostly about the love between Sanjiv and Advaita.

Not in this lifetime will there be enough of love stories. They are the elixir of a storyteller’s world. Muthukumarasamy’s fault was not in selecting a love story but in giving it wrapped in a thick coating of melodrama because he believes that will tug at your heart. Not in this time, when the generation x has redefined all the dating rules and meeting and breaking up happen in a span of just one day. So obviously, Sagakkal is out of place.

But he has a nice storyline; an aspiring young boy who resists all his temptations to fall in love because he has larger things to achieve in life, a circle of not too bad friends and their friendship, an accidental love and an ideal mother. Yes, it’s hard not to get carried away with usual stereotypes when you deal with these things. Muthukumarasamy couldn’t resist it either.

Sanjiv (from Kulir 100 degree) plays Mahi who falls hook, line and sinker for Devasena, played by Advaita. Sanjiv has his moves right and Advaita is a promising looking debutant who could dance and emote as well. But th

e story built around them moves at a painfully slow pace. First 10 reels of the movie waddle aimlessly and then the director decides he could introduce the story. The fact that the movie is super predictable doesn’t help the proceedings either.

Few of the comedy portions in the movie click; like the one where the lookalikes of actors get chased by the villains, and the scenes in which Vennira Aadai Moorthy desire to perform with Tamannah are also the highlights.

The movie has an amateurish look and feel. Cinematography is a letdown and songs are just about okay. Director Muthukumarasamy must tune his direction to suit to the sensibilities of the target audience. Otherwise, his product will be stuck in the middle for want of audience.
